The excitement is palpable for a young male dog as he chases down his pack. At 8-10 weeks old, African Wild Dog (Lycaon pictus) pups are out of the den and eating solid food. Their biggest challenge at this age is keeping up with the pack. Also called “Painted Wolves,” this species is highly social. Typical litter size is 6-16 puppies, with 10 being average. We encountered a pack with 11 puppies, including this male, just old enough to be out of the den and trying to keep up. Not sure how he injured his rear leg.
