Black Bear (Ursus americanus) youngster caught in between, in two ways. He appears to be about 2 years old - run off by his mother and on his own for the first time in his life. On a more tangible level, he's about halfway up this tree - not sure whether the other bear approaching him is a threat. There is a clear pecking order among Black Bears in the North Woods. Size matters, and this guy is a few years away from being able to show much confidence.
