Brown Bear spring cub watching us carefully from the safety of the autumn grass. When these cubs are first introduced to the meadow, typically in mid-June, the grass is their refuge. It shields them from the unfriendly eyes of male bears, who will sometimes kill small cubs in order to mate with the mother. Apparently the female cannot come into heat, and mate, while she's producing milk for the cubs.
