Bears are usually very good mothers. They exert a lot of mental, physical and emotional energy to sustain and protect their cubs. Salmon run involves a heightened sense of urgency. Mom needs to keep her cubs safe and keep them fed, as well as taking care of herself, to ensure that the whole family gains sufficient fat reserves to last over the long winter hibernation. This mom was an excellent fisher. She caught dozens of salmon during our stay, and shared "most" of them with her cubs. Her cubs looked healthy (i.e., fat!) so hope they have a healthy hibernation.
